Miss California Just Won't Go Away

Oh dear. Miss California just will not go away. She has sadly decided to continue her 15 minutes of fame by appearing in an advert for the National Organisation for Marriage which opposes same-sex marriage. One does not know whether to laugh or cry when the highest profile person a campaign can use is someone who knows nothing about the issue. Seriously this week she did an interview with the Fox News programme The Record and was asked about her involvement in the campaign.

We all support her right to express an opinion. The issue, though, is her thinking and rationale behind that opinion. The problem is judging by her interview there is no thinking behind her opposition to gay marriage beyond being raised that way and wanting her children to grow up in a society where traditional marriage is the norm. She does not explain why. Despite being pressed on the issue she was unable to give one sound or logical reason for opposing it. When asked about other issues such as gay adoption she was unable to even answer the questions. I can think of several reasons why same sex marriages should be legalised yet a spokewoman for the campaign against them is unable to give one logical reason why they should be opposed. Have I missed something here?

I would have thought that in the time between the contest and accepting her role as a spokesperson she would have had time to think about her view and come up with constructive reasons for having that view. She may have even done some research or been briefed on the issue. However, she seems none the wiser and if anything less coherent than during the contest. Many of her defenders said she was put on the spot by Perez Hilton and her response then was simply because she was put under pressure. I do not buy that excuse for one second.

As I have said she is still none the wiser or any more clued up on the issue and her Fox News interview proves that. Also by joining the advertising campaign against marriage she is further campaigning for something she knows very little if anything about. When I support a campoaign I always hope those behind it know more than a bit about the issue. Equally when I support a campaign I know the reasons why I support it.

In fact I suspect she is probably the best secret weapon that the pro gay marriage groups have as I suspect floating voters on the issue will see through Miss California's lack of knowledge of the issue. I also suspect she has been courted by various anti same-sex marriage groups who want to make her little more than a puppet. Thankfully I believe her involvement will back fire. Either way I hope Miss California makes the most of her short-lived fame and enjoys it while she can. With any luck she will be yesterday's news before long or maybe that's wishful thinking.

The Ultimate Snub: Facebook Deletion

Have you ever been on the receiving end of the ultimate snub? Have you ever been a victim of the most degrading insult? Yes, I am talking about being deleted as a Facebook friend. Could anything be worse? A few months ago a friend of mine seemed very agitated and upset. I asked why. It turned out someone they barely knew had deleted them as a friend on Facebook. This "friend" had become the ex partner of a good friend of his so was deleting people who only knew through his ex. A bit of spring cleaning and all that. My friend though was most aggreived that this person has the cheek and insubordination to delete him even though in the real world he may have met him as many times as twice. Yes the grand total of twice. I told him not to take it too personally and that there were plenty more facebook fish in the sea. Well, I tried.

Well just the other day I decided to go through all my Facebook friends and heavens above I noticed that at least two people had deleted me. When they did that I do not know. The shame of it. When will I ever be able to look my neighbour in the face. I feel emotionally scarred. Does Facebook offer compensation. I will never be able to live with myself again. I will have to retreat into a shell never to leave. Promises promises. To be honest one of those Facebook friends I barely knew in the flesh and he had a habit of baiting my other Facebook friends so good riddance. He probably took offence when I told him to stop calling people c***s. I wondered why he had gone so quiet. He was a weirdo anyway. Slasher stalker alert and all that.

The second person I have no idea what their reasons were. Perhaps they did a spring clean and just kept on close friends. Probably sensible. I am just too easy.

Any way I do find it fascinating how the world of networking sites has added a whole new dimension to many of our lives and emotions. People feel rejected when they are deleted as a friend and can take it extremely personally despite perhaps never having met the person in the flesh. As a wise person recently told me once you shut your computer down or close your laptop the world of the internet ends and you can start living in the real world again and enjoy what is really important in your life. Certainly puts a perspective on things. Perhaps I should take his advice.

Miss California on Gay Marriage

There has been a recent controversy over this week's Miss USA pageant. Miss California was asked by 'celebrity' blogger Perez Hilton whether she supported gay marriage. She responded that marriage should be between a man and a woman and that was the way she was raised. Ok a couple of things. I strongly support her right to express her opinion and will fight for her right to do so. I expect most people here would support that right whether we support her actual opinion or not. That is not what is at issue.

Seven nations have gay marriage including the Netherlands, South Africa and Canada, and four states in the USA, and no you do not need to be married in a church. Until recently so did her native state of California. 16 other nations allow same sex civil ceremonies. The issue to me is not about her right to express her opinion or even the opinion she expressed. It is her reasoning and lack of logic behind it. She said she believed marriage between a man and a woman was wrong because that is how she was brought up. Doh! Go figure.

So because our parents jump off a cliff do we? So because our parents have an opinion do we have to agree. When I have an opinion on something it is not because my mum and dad have that opinion but because I have thought about it.We are born with our looks and hair colour but our opinions often come from conditioning. Yes when we are young many of our views are those of our parents but part of growing up is being able to think for yourself. That is where my issue lies with her.

Conditioning seems to play such a large part in people's views and much ignorance or even bigotry comes from that. It is often when we take a step back and think for ourselves that we often change our prejudices. In the case of Miss California I would respect her view far more if she gave a logical reason for having her view instead of simply having it because that is how she was raised. So yes I will strongly defend her right to hold her views but I am sad at her lack of reasoning. That is where I think most people have the issue. Social conditioning plays such a role in some peoples lives that they do not question it.
